CAR INSURANCE FOR NEW AND YOUNG DRIVERS, THROUGH MARMALADE
We know that being a young driver can be extremely exciting. If you've recently passed your test, there's no better feeling than the relief and the enjoyment of your newfound independence. You're now much less reliant on friends, family, and public transport to get around – and that's incredibly freeing.
Before you can get out on the road, though, you need to protect yourself with the right young driver insurance policy. Our sister brand, Marmalade, are specialists in providing car insurance for young drivers, holding both provisional and full driving licences. Marmalade’s car insurance products all work with black box technology, coming with a handy app to rate your driving skills that gives young drivers the opportunity to prove they’re a safe driver in return for a more personalised insurance premium.
As a brand, Marmalade understands the struggle young drivers may have when it comes to finding a car insurance type that suits their needs. That is why they offer a variety of cover lengths and types, from pay as you go miles to annual car insurance.
WHAT INSURANCE OPTIONS DO NEW AND YOUNG DRIVERS HAVE?
Own car insurance
If you have your own car, Marmalade offers black box insurance with options to get annual cover or pay as you go. If you choose the pay as you go option, simply choose your cover based on how many miles you expect to drive, fit the telematics tag, and get to driving. The black box app allows you to track your driving score and earn a safe driving discount at renewal if your driving is considered safe.
Named driver car insurance
If you share someone else’s car, you can get a named driver policy from Marmalade, also with options to get annual or pay as you go cover. Marmalade’s named driver insurance is fully comprehensive and provides no risk to the car owners No Claims Discount in the event of the named driver making a claim. Both cover options also use black box technology, and the app is downloaded by both the named and the main driver of the car, so the tag only tracks the named driver’s journeys.
Not sure which one is right for you? Marmalade have a handy product finder tool that can help you choose.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT YOUNG DRIVERS' INSURANCE
To help you, we've put together this list of frequently asked questions regarding car insurance for young drivers. Topics include how much it costs, the different levels of cover and how to get a quote.
Car insurance for young drivers in the UK does typically cost more than for those who fall into older age categories. This may seem unfair because, when you have just passed your test, there's no way of knowing what sort of driver you are going to be.
The insurers don't know that, either, which is why they rely on historical data to inform their pricing – and, typically, young drivers are more likely to be involved in accidents. This is backed up by statistics released by the Department for Transport, where young drivers are classed as between 17 and 24 years old. As a result, insurers see those in that age group as a higher risk, which is why young driver insurance tends to be more expensive.
There are a few steps that you can take to try to secure cheaper car insurance for young drivers:
- Choose a smaller, less powerful car with a high safety rating
- Avoid making modifications to your car, such as tinted windows or alloy upgrades
- Select a higher voluntary excess. However, you need to be sure that you can afford to pay that – as well as your compulsory excess – if you have to make a claim
- Keep your car locked up in a secure building such as a garage
- Consider taking out black box car insurance. Also known as telematics insurance, it uses a device that is fitted to your car to monitor your driving style. The idea is that your premium will be calculated to reflect the way in which you drive
