Typically, classics are used as second cars by their owners. They're only driven occasionally – rather than for everyday journeys – and as such are seen as lower risk by insurers. On top of that, they're usually subject to a higher level of care.
Classic or vintage car insurance is designed to protect vehicles that are more than 15 years old. These tend to only be used as a second car, with much lower annual mileage. This often means that classic car insurance sometimes works out cheaper than the standard cover you take out for your everyday vehicle.
There is no set definition as to when a car becomes a classic. But to give you a rough guide, the HMRC defines a classic car as more than 15 years old with a list price of at least £15,000.
However, to be exempt from paying vehicle tax and getting an MOT, the car must be at least 40 years old and have had no major changes that affect the way it works in the past 30 years.

There are a number of things you can do that may help reduce your premium:
- Restrict your annual mileage as much as possible
- Keep your car in a secure facility such as a garage or lock-up
- Add other security features such as a tracking device
- Avoid making modifications to your vehicle
- Join a car club, as some insurers will offer discounts to members
- Choose a higher voluntary excess. If you do this, you might want to consider whether you can afford to pay this, plus your compulsory excess, in the event of a claim
